The largest desert in the world is located in Africa. This desert is named Sahara, and it occupies ten percent of Africa's total land area. This runs through 11 countries which makes a part of Africa to be known as the Western Sahara. The Atlantic Ocean borders the Sahara desert.

Sahara has different kinds of landforms. Some parts of this desert are sand dunes, mountains, oases and stony steppers. Sand dunes are mountains made of sand. It usually has a height of 600 feet. These are found in shifting sand areas. The shifting sand areas are called ergs. Both the sand sheets and dunes are twenty five percent of Sahara. The heights of pyramidal dunes are one hundred fifty meters while the mountain sand ridges are three hundred fifty meters. Sandstorms are also common in the place. Sahara's soils are biologically inactive because they are low in organic matter. The animals present in her are usually wild animals. These include foxes, hyenas and many more.

Despite the desert surroundings of Sahara, there are still villages and towns in the place. The margins of Sahara have more rainfall. This is why greater vegetation is found in these areas than the central area. Scarce rainfall also falls in any season but they come in irregular way. If there are no rain that comes on many years, the whole place suffer intense storm by the time the rain comes. There are areas in Sahara that has oases from underground aquifers. There are also that lacks water reserves. During the time of immemorial desert, people were able to tame the Sahara. They were able to make miracle of irrigation in the streams. The oases then flourished with the kind of vegetables in lowest level. There are also fruits like oranges that flourished in the place.

Sahara is considered alive desert because there are people and towns in it. It has ancient towns that serve as witness for Sahara's rich culture and trading past. There were also tiny oases town that were present before. Nomad camps were also present. The tents of these nomads are white pointed roofs which can be easily spotted evening great distance. Tata is one town in Sahara of Morocco. This down is the meeting placer of dessert and mountains. Other towns are Foum Zguid and Tinfou.

The desert surroundings of Sahara do not keeps travelers away. It still has its own way to attract people to visit the place. Sahara offers two breathtaking views that visitors would love to visit. These views are sunset and sandstorm.

The sandstorms in Sahara are beneficial in Central and South American because these places have deposits of sands. Rain forest's mineral nutrients are mostly from Sahara. The regions poor in iron can get iron from Sahara's sandstorm. The plantain growth in Hawaii then increases because of the dust. But these sandstorms also have its disadvantages. Soil loss happens in all dry lands. This removes the nutrients needed for the productivity of agriculture.

The desert of Sahara can be the best destination from all the deserts. It offers the best sunset view that one could ever experience in his lifetime.
